The City of Hampton now knows who will serve as mayor until the next election in November.
Following the resignation of current Mayor Brook Boehmler, which will be effective July 1, the Hampton City Council opened the pending vacancy up for applicants in order to appoint a replacement. Boehmler in April issued a letter of resignation to the council, citing a desire to focus on his career and spend more time with his family.
The council last Thursday in a 4-0 decision moved to appoint current At-Large Councilman Russell Wood to begin serving as mayor on July 1. According to Wood’s application for the position, he brings 26 years of experience in a field that has allowed him to gain knowledge in strategic planning, development, land use, outcomes and analysis as well as government regulations, finance and operations.
Wood also serves on several local and state boards and commissions.
“What I think I bring to the table is my ability to look at systems, look at where we want to be and develop action steps to get there and look at what the barriers are and how we mitigate those barriers,” he said during the interview portion of Thursday’s meeting.
