The Hampton 2017 HMA Mill and Overlay project will begin on June 20, and last just about a week — weather depending — ending on June 27.
Public Works Director Doug Tarr said at an informational meeting to community residents on May 18, that the nearly 17-block project will be the second largest roads project in 12 years; the last was the north side of Highway 65 in 2009.
“It is going to be a little bit painful for a few days so to speak,” Tarr said, “but it’s less intrusive than it would have been compared to a total road reconstruction.”
Beginning on June 20, Heartland Asphalt and its sub-contractors will begin milling (grind up in-place asphalt and removing it) 1 St. NW, immediately north of Highway 3, all the way up downtown. Next will come 1st Avenue NW (from 3rd St. NW-Federal St. N), 2nd Avenue NW (from 2nd St. NW-Federal St. N) then 2nd St. NW, just north of Highway 3. The entire milling process should end June 22, weather permitting. During active business hours, crews will then move to mill streets around the less active Band Shell Park area.
