Last week, Franklin County Sheriff Linn Larson spoke with representatives from area churches on what can be done to increase the peace of mind of parishioners at local houses of worship.
Larson said it was a chance to begin the conversation for church officials to develop an “all-hazard” plan that addresses various risks churches and parishoners may face. He said those risks include vandalism, medical calls, storm safety and even potential active shooters.
“They need to start to look at some of those basic plans and be able to protect people while they’re in their structures,” he said.
Addressing a crowd of more than 20 people at Geneva United Methodist Church last Monday, Larson said safety plans don’t have to be overly complicated. One set plan could be modified to address several hazardous situations. Larson said informing people where to gather and go in a severe situation is the first and most important step on increasing safety in the church.
