Give generously this holiday season

This time of the year always gives us a chance to count our blessings and reflect on life’s positives. Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and there’s definitely a lot to be thankful for here in Hampton and Franklin County.

We live in a friendly community that supports progress through numerous group-driven betterment initiatives. Fundraising is one of our strengths, and the generous nature of local businesses and individuals has helped many projects become a reality in the past. Things like the Hampton-Dumont Dog Pound project, Band Shell Park renovations and the Windsor Theatre restoration were made possible because residents joined together and encouraged them from start to finish.

However, there’s still a few things that could use the community’s support as we look ahead. Multiple fundraisers are underway or in the works for future projects, and it’s important to keep them in mind when you break out the checkbook during the holiday season.

There’s quite a few worthy causes seeking donations this year. The Hampton Public Library is looking to raise $50,000 by Dec. 20 for repairs to its trademark curved brick wall, which has a bulge that needs fixing in the near future. The Hampton Community Christian Daycare is also seeking financial help for a 3,800 square foot building expansion. Daycare officials are hoping to raise $200,000 by the end of the year to add two more rooms and a tornado shelter for three- and four-year-old preschool classes. Both the library project and daycare expansion are important community investments aimed at strengthening educational resouces for residents in Hampton and the surrounding area.

Two other local betterment initiatives could also use your financial assistance this year. Latimer’s American Legion Riders Post 658 is accepting donations for a new Franklin County Freedom Rock in Coulter, and the Hampton Kiwanis Club is planning a project that would upgrade playground equipment at Harriman Park. Both projects hope to improve the aesthetic appeal of each community while simultaneously creating added attractions for visitors to the county. Parks are a big draw for families, and investing in them is important for future growth.

Of course, there’s plenty of other worthwhile causes that could use your help during the holidays. You can always donate to the Franklin County Food Pantry, the Hampton United Methodist Church’s Cleanup Closet and various other charity initiatives throughout the area. Be it food, money, gifts or time, your donation and help is always welcomed by these valuable organizations – it can go a long way in making the holidays memorable for someone less fortunate than you. Please consider donating to one of these groups during the holidays and support someone during difficult times.

There are many opportunities to give back and help out in the weeks and months ahead. If you’re in position to give this holiday season, do so generously. Your contribution will help make Hampton and Franklin County a better place.
