Counting our blessings
This time of the year always gives us a chance to sit back and reflect on the important things in life. While it’s easy to get caught up in the monotony of our jobs and other obligations, Thanksgiving provides a reality check by emphasizing family, friends and the countless blessings we take for granted on a regular basis.
Recent global events have given new meaning to the holiday this year. The terror attacks in Paris and civil unrest in the Middle East have created a tumultuous situation abroad, and we can thank our lucky stars that we live in a safe, stable country. Families are being torn a part, war is rampant and a regional humanitarian crisis is quickly spreading into Europe. America’s biggest problems pale in comparison.
When you sit down at your Thanksgiving table this weekend, take the time to count your blessings and appreciated life’s positives. Whether it’s your family, friends, health or job, be thankful for what you have. It could certainly be worse, and it’s important to look at life with a little perspective before complaining that it could be better.
     Have a happy Thanksgiving!

Think small this weekend
Though the appeal of mega deals at big box stores will entice millions this weekend, it’s important to remember our local retailers as we charge head first into the 2015 holiday shopping season.
Nov. 28 is Small Business Saturday. The annual event was started by American Express to encourage consumers to shop small at local businesses during the Thanksgiving weekend, but is now a key piece to the holiday shopping extravaganza. According to Entrepreneur.com, 88 million people have shown up to “shop small” since 2010.
Admittedly, it’s easy to look elsewhere during this time of the year. Larger cities like Mason City, Cedar Falls and Des Moines often seem like the places to look for deals, but residents shouldn’t be so quick to assume. Our local merchants offer competitive prices and friendly service without the windshield time. Why waste the gas when you can simply drive a few miles to find what you’re looking for?
The benefits are obvious. You’re helping hometown businesses while simultaneously stimulating Franklin County’s economy by keeping your dollar inside our borders. The sales taxes help our schools and other entities, too, which is another added benefit to keeping your dollar local. It seems rather counterproductive to drive more than 50 miles to buy something you could find here, even if you are saving a few bucks in the process.
Simply put, it’s imperative to support our local businesses during the holiday season. Franklin County has multiple shops and stores full with interesting gift ideas for everyone on your list. Be it clothes, antiques, crafts or something in between, they’ve got what you’re looking for. Bigger isn’t always better, and our downtown retailers are constant reminders that you can find great deals without the hassle of crowds, driving and other holiday headaches.
