A few pictures of an idyllic New England town was all Maia Zewert needed to know where she wanted to begin her journalism career.
Zewert, a 2011 CAL gradu-ate, found a position as a gen-eral assignment reporter at the Lincoln County News in coastal Maine while applying for jobs towards the end of her college career at Iowa State University.
“I fell in love with it im-mediately,” she said. “It was that quaint, downtown New England, semi-Gilmore Girls-esque feeling.”
Zewert admittedly wasn’t sure what to expect as she packed up her life to move to Maine towards the end of the summer of 2015. But just a little more than two years later, she earned the Bob Drake Young Writer’s Award, given to the top young jour-nalist in the state by the Maine Press Association.
While Zewert’s professional career to this point has been spent on the East Coast, her journey to Maine began in rural Sheffield.
