If anyone saw Stan Lee, Buzz Aldrin and Roberto Clemete walking into the CAL school building last week, it wasn’t a trick of the mind.
Students portrayed those individuals, as well as many other historical figures, during CAL’s Night of Notables.
The event is the culmination of a month long project where fifth graders select a figure that has made an impact on American history. The student gathers resources, writes a research paper and at the end of the month, dresses as their selection and presents a short speech regarding their character’s career. After the speech, guests ventured into the gym where the students presented artifacts and a slideshow relating to their person.
“We are teaching our general public and friends about famous notables so they can learn about the history and those who have made an impact,” said fifth grade teacher Mardy Schaefer, who organizes the event.
Schaefer said the project is multifaceted in the skills it requires. Students learn research skills, writing, public speaking and communication as well as technology skills to produce presentations.
