HAMPTON – Sparks flew in a pivotal match between the Bulldogs and North Butler-Clarksville during this Senior Night triangular on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
The 160-pound match between Braden Hansen and Donnie Kielman involved a lot of pushing and shoving and both wrestlers dragging the other out of bounds in an attempt at a takedown.
It resulted in an 8-0 major decision for Hansen as the Bulldogs eventually claimed the dual over the Bearcats, 41-27 and completed the sweep following a 72-12 dual victory against Nevada to start the evening.
“Fuzz (Hansen) likes to get that way sometimes,” coach Patrick Hansen said. “I don’t know for sure, that’s just Fuzz, though. He’ll do that to anybody. He’s a scrapper. He just feeds on that, he likes to get in shoving matches and it raises his level a little bit. I wish he wouldn’t, but it’s what he does.”
Ask North Butler-Clarksville coach Frank Kisley and he liked it.
“Just a little push and shoving,” Kisley said. “That’s okay, as long as it is good sportsmanship, which it was. Intensity is good, I like that in kids. He handled himself and the Hampton-Dumont kid did, also. Both wanted to win. Both knew it was a huge match in the dual. Big match.”
The Bulldogs honored their seniors before the final dual of the night against NB-C, including three wrestlers, the cheerleaders and managers.
Jaycob Martzahn, fresh off win No. 100, added two more with a first period fall against Nevada’s Luis Lopez and a pin in three minutes, 28 seconds during only the second match of NB-C sophomore Isaac Backer’s career.
“He (Backer) broke his collarbone (last year) missed the whole year and he had a broken leg in football (this year), so that was his first actual high school match tonight,” Kisley said. “We’ve got some conditioning to do – he just got released on Monday. He’ll be there.”
Both Aleks Salinas and Logan Walker went 1-1 with losses against the Bearcats’ Jeremy Shier (182) and Jase Wiebke (195).
Both teams bumped their weight classes up in the upper weights because of some missing wrestlers.
“Our ’52-pounder is out with a cold, Cole Negen,” Kisley said. “Tweaked his neck, too, against Lake Mills, so we are just getting him time to heal. David Crow (at 195), we thought he had appendicitis, but it’s just the stomach flu, so he’ll be back. Two big kids for us we could have won. No offense to Hampton-Dumont, they are a good team. We had a shot, we had our chances – ’45 was a bit of a surprise we got beat there. Joebgen just got out of sorts a little bit. Even ’52, Dawson Testroet, it was a winnable match. We had our shots.
“At 220, we did a nice job coming back and Chet looks awesome, 23-0, he does a nice job. We’re getting better. Backer is back, at 138 I like where our kids are. We had a hard practice on Monday. This dual, it’s nice to win, but it does nothing in the big picture. We left some gas in the tank. I pushed us pretty hard (Monday). You could tell.”
Elias Cortez scored a pin at 195 against JC Ulrich in 4:00 to keep the dual out of reach before Walker’s loss by 7-3 decision against Wiebke.
“That was a big win for Elias,” coach Hansen said. “That is a good kid for North Butler. Elias bumped up, he’s supposed to be our ’82-pounder and he went ’95 – that was a good win for Elias. He’s going to start surprising people pretty soon.
“We bumped up Jack from ’13 to get some good matches in. It’s good for us. We want to get to the point where we’re not afraid to bump up wrestling anybody and we want to wrestle good matches, we’re getting there.”
