HAMPTON – After a dominating performance against Eagle Grove, the Hampton-Dumont wrestling team’s hopes for a sweep in its home opener were dashed by Clear Lake on Thursday, Dec. 12.

The Bulldogs got their first dual victory of the season over the Eagles, 66-12, and watched as the Lions put up a perfect score (84-0) against Eagle Grove.

When it was H-D’s turn against Clear Lake, it fared slightly better, but it resulted in a 53-15 loss as the Lions won the first seven matches of the dual to lead 37-0.

But when the Bulldogs’ 160-pounder Alex Gonzalez posted the first victory in the dual, a 9-5 decision in which he trailed twice, he showed exuberance.

“I was pretty excited because it was the first varsity match I won this season and I was the first one to win a match (against Clear Lake) and I got excited, I guess,” Gonzalez said. “It wasn’t necessary, but I was trying to get the team pumped up and it felt pretty good with everyone cheering me on.”
