HAMPTON – Adding another home dual meet turned out to be a good experiment for the Bulldog wrestling team as they went 3-2 against some solid competition on Saturday, Jan. 4.

Coach Patrick Hansen’s team defeated St. Ansgar, Clear Lake and Eagle Grove while dropping a pair to Class 2A No. 2 (dual) ranked Osage and to Class 1A No. 7 (tournament) ranked West Hancock to finish 3-2.

The Bulldogs finished up the day with the Eagles of West Hancock, going from a 26-9 lead with six matches to go, but with all of the Eagles’ upper weights individually ranked turned into a 45-26 win for West Hancock.

“We thought we could get that one from West Hancock, they’re pretty tough,” coach Hansen said. “Carl (Barkema) had a good match in overtime. I thought he could have won that one. The one at 160, we thought we could get but kind of got caught. It’s the way it rolls. We’re young, they’re old. It’s the way it works.”

Similarly, the Bulldogs turned the tables against Eagle Grove, trailing 25-3 six weight classes in only to win the next eight and take the 48-25 dual.

During that dual, senior 145-pounder David Cornejo upset Class 1A No. 4 Mark Dawson in overtime, getting a takedown with 17 seconds remaining as the Bulldogs started to roll.

“That kid is tough,” Hansen said of Dawson. “I think he placed last year. He’s a good wrestler. A huge win for him (Cornejo) now. He’s starting to get his feet wet, he’s at practice every time. He’s getting his weight to where he can be.”

Starting the day 2-0 with a 46-27 win over St. Ansgar and then a 44-29 victory against Clear Lake, the Bulldogs were down 21-0 right away against Osage.

Earning wins against the Green Devils were Jack Showalter (113), Jaycob Martzahn (132), Cornejo and Braden Hansen (160).

Martzahn was the only Bulldog to go 5-0 on the day. Cornejo was 4-1 and Braden Hansen was 3-2 while Jack Showalter was 2-3.

Bryan Flores, who returned to the mat after his second concussion protocol within the year has been cleared and finished 3-2 while 120-pounder Jakyb Kapp was 4-1, losing his only match to Class 2A No. 8 Nicholas Fox of Osage.

“Jack Showalter had a good day, I thought,” coach Hansen said. “The kid from Eagle Grove is ranked. He got beat (in overtime). The kid from Clear Lake is really tough. We had a lot of tight matches, lost it at the end. He’s wrestled so many tough kids, it’s just a battle for him and I hope at the end of the year it will pay off for him.

“Bryan Flores, it’s good to have him back. He had his CAT scan on Dec. 27 and he’s all clear.”

Stepping in to wrestle at 126 was Andyn Showalter, who went 1-4 in place of Tomas Cavazos. Coach Hansen said he was unsure if Cavazos will return.

“I don’t know,” coach Hansen said. “Andyn should probably be at 120, but he took his two pounds and he’ll be at 126 the rest of the year. We’re a young team, they are 15-16 years old and they have to learn the hard way sometimes.”

The Bulldogs will have a home dual against Webster City on Thursday, Jan. 9 and then have its regular dual tournament this Saturday, Jan. 11.

“Five teams, two mats, we’ll wrestle two duals, have a bye and wrestle two more duals,” coach Hansen said of the upcoming dual tournament. “Waterloo West and MFL MarMac dropped out. We’ll have Lake Mills, they are ranked, too, that will be a tough one on Saturday. Thursday, we have Webster City here and that will be a good one to have. Youth kids before and that will be traditional single dual.”

He said it was good to get the win over Clear Lake, although the Lions are down a little this year.

“We wrestled good, keep moving forward, keep getting better,” coach Hansen said. “We’re working hard every day and I think it is starting to show.”
