Bulldogs crown two champs at Doug Wood Invitational

MANSON – With five reaching the final, the Bulldog wrestling team crowned two champions in finishing fifth out of 11 teams at the Doug Wood Invitational hosted by Manson-Northwest Webster on Saturday, Dec. 7.
Jaycob Martzahn, wrestling at 132 pounds, and Carl Barkema at 138 were the two title winners for coach Patrick Hansen’s squad.
Martzahn defeated Class 1A No. 10 Nate Thomsen of East Sac County at 132 pounds, winning by 4-2 decision over the top seed. Barkema pinned Manson-Northwest Webster’s Daniel Thoma in 4 minutes, 47 seconds; Thoma upset the second-seeded wrestler in the semifinal.
Also wrestling in the final but just coming up short were 120-pounder Jakyb Kapp, who took his first loss of the season; Jack Showalter at 113 pounds, losing by 5-1 decision; and Braden Hansen at 160, being pinned in four minutes by South Central Calhoun’s Blake McAlister.
The Bulldogs scored 118 points for their finish. The host school won the tournament with 184 points.
