Bulldogs advance two to 2A district

CLEAR LAKE — It wasn’t the ideal day to have a bad one for the Bulldog wrestling team in the Class 2A Sectional 1 at Clear Lake.

With only two advancing to the district meet this Saturday at Algona, several finished third, just short of moving on.

The duo who earned sectional championships were Carl Barkema at 138 pounds and David Cornejo at 145.

Barkema defeated Ryan Adams of Osage by 8-1 decision in the final after pinning Forest City’s Kaleb Umbaugh in the semifinal.

Cornejo, meanwhile, won by major decision over GHV’s Luke Brown, 9-1. The junior won by 11-5 decision against Brandon Harris of Algona in the semifinal.

Six of coach Patrick Hansen’s wrestlers finished third — all of whom didn’t get the chance at a wrestleback.

Barkema will face Noah Strantz of Okoboji in the semifinal at Algona this Saturday. Cornejo’s opening opponent will be Nick Gasca of Webster City. Cornejo didn’t face Gasca in the team’s dual when they met, however, he pinned him in the North Central Conference semifinal.

Coach Hansen’s Bulldogs finished in a tie for third with Algona, scoring 162 points. Osage (235.5) and Forest City (203.5) were the champion and runner-up, respectively, and advanced to the 2A regional dual this week.
