Bruce Theodore Dohrmann, 77

Bruce Theodore Dohrmann, 77, of Latimer, passed away Thursday, April 27, 2023, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 5, 2023, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Latimer. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Burial will take place in the Hampton Cemetery. Counsell Woodley Funeral Home of Hampton is caring for Bruce and his family.

On December 5, 1943, Theodore Edward Dohrmann and Myrna Johnson were united in holy wedlock at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Latimer, Iowa. To this union, a son, Bruce Theodore Dohrmann, was born on May 1, 1945. Due to a birth deformity, Bruce was unable to walk until his second birthday when he received a new prosthesis.

Growing up as a youngster, he had love and respect for agriculture and animals. Bruce was a proud member of the Scott Township 4-H Club. He was a long time member of the Franklin County 4-H Club and was even the Vice President at one time. Bruce was an avid sports junkie throughout high school, college and thereafter. He was a college wrestling fan, and a huge fan of collegiate and pro football, more specifically the Iowa State Cyclones and Chicago Bears. In high school, Bruce was involved in livestock judging. He was a member of the Franklin County Livestock Judging Team who placed first in the state and went on to Nationals that were held in Chicago. There, they placed seventh.

Bruce was a graduate from CAL Community School. In the fall of 1963, he enrolled into the Ag Journalism curriculum at Iowa State University. While at ISU, Bruce worked the sports desk as an ISU reporter. He was prolific in writing. Bruce was an author for the “ISU Daily” and even won some awards doing so. In the early 1970s, he returned to the farm west of Latimer and was his home until 2009 when he moved to Hampton. While living in Hampton, Bruce became a great fan of ESPN and IPTV. He enjoyed spending quality time in Denzil Saskatchewan on the family farm. Bruce was fortunate with good friends from Chicago where he had the opportunity to watch the Chicago Bears defeat the New England Patriots at the Super Bowl XX on January 26, 1986. He had to wait thirty years for the Chicago Cubs to win the World Series in 2016. Later in life, Bruce was fortunate to have become close friends with the WWII famous flying ace, Bill Collerton.

He was the architect of the first Chicago Sports and Vacation Show and was also the outdoor editor of WGM radio in Chicago. Bruce was lucky to have been on the air three Saturdays out of the year.

Bruce was a lifetime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Latimer and was a volunteer counselor for high school students for several years. He was a member of Sigma Delta Ki Fraternity, Owatonna Eagles, FFA and was a 35 year member of Ducks Unlimited. As a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Owatonna, Minnesota, Bruce was a volunteer worker and a good donor for the Eagles Cancer Telethon.

Throughout life, he was fascinated with the dog breed, Golden Retriever. Bruce was lucky enough to have owned and worked with three Golden Retrievers throughout his lifetime.

In later life, Bruce turned from water fowl hunting to Muskie fishing and was struck down by Muskie fever until the day he died.

Bruce is survived by many cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
