Brost argues tax holiday doesn’t cover enough merchandise

Letter to the Editor
To the editor:
I have seen several an-nouncements by Speaker of the Iowa House, Linda Up-meyer, stating the tax holiday weekend for back-to-school shopping is one of her accom-plishments. She gets to go into great length in her columns about this–which are printed in all major papers–in addition to pictures from the Fourth of July parade in Clear Lake, being printed with her Under the Golden Dome publica-tion.
I believe the Aug. 3 and 4 sales tax holiday does not go far enough; school items such as paper, notebooks, high-lighters, pens, pencils, cray-ons, pocket calculators, art supplies and erasers are not included. The scope of it only being applied to select clothing and footwear items–not to exceed $100–seems very lim-ited.
I call on voters and constit-uents to ask the Iowa Legisla-ture in the State House to have more effective tax holi-days that cover more merchan-dise. I would also like people to be more critical of Linda Upmeyer’s leadership in the House, because the economy in Iowa is not being stimulat-ed.
