FC engineer confident in county’s bridge system despite state’s dubious national ranking 
 
     Franklin County Engineer Jay Waddingham wasn’t surprised by a recent report that ranked Iowa’s bridges as some of the worst in the nation.
     “When you have the sheer number of gravel roads that we do, then you’re more than likely going to have some problems keeping up with bridges,” he said. “Now, do we need all these roads? That’s something we’ve debated over the years.”
     The American Road & Transportation Builders Association last month released its annual report on structurally deficient bridges in each state. Twenty-one percent of Iowa’s bridges were considered structurally deficient in 2015, which was the third-highest percentage in the entire country. However, Iowa had the highest overall number of structurally deficient bridges with 5,025.
