Betty Flint, 90

Betty Flint, 90, of Hampton, passed away on Monday, June 14, 2021 at her home in Hampton. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 19th at the First Christian Church in Hampton with burial in the Hampton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Friday at the First Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Hampton Public Library, Franklin County Fair Board or the Friends of the Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sietsema-Atkinson Funeral Home in Hampton.

Elizabeth (Betty) Louise Flint was born on July 31, 1930, the third daughter of Carl and Emily (Jennison) Mitchell, in Chicago, Illinois and lived her early years in Chicago.

From 6th grade until high school graduation, a mentor/benefactor provided her with voice lessons at Drake University in Des Moines. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Des Moines and attended Park College in Parkville, MO for a time.

Betty met her life-long partner, David Flint, in 1946 and they were married on November 16, 1951. Before coming to Hampton, they lived in Pammel Court, Ames, followed by Shenandoah, and Cedar Rapids.

Betty was active in the life of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) by serving on various committees including the Elder, Financial Secretary, Treasurer, as well as being a Sunday School teacher for over 25 years. She also directed the church choir for over 25 years.

She was active in the Girl Scouts, serving as a North Iowa District Officer Neighborhood Chairman, Junior, and Cadet leader. In 1975, she took her Cadet troop to Savannah, GA. For a time, she was also a Cub and Boy Scout Leader.

Betty enjoyed her family, and she did not return to work until all were in school. She worked for a time with her friend, Mary Judy, at the Selective Service Office. She worked as the Secretary/Financial Secretary for the United Methodist Church from 1969 until her retirement in 2002.

Reading was a passion and she served for a time on the Board of the Hampton Public Library. Along with Judy Harper, Betty was instrumental in the establishment of Friends of the Library. She enjoyed playing bridge with friends and sharing the latest books. She worked with the Franklin County Fair Board to raise funds for the new wash-rack at the fairgrounds. She was also active in the Cemetery Friends organization.

Betty is survived by her children Paul (Sue) of Alexander, IA, Margaret Flint-Suter, Hampton, Craig (Linda) Edmond, OK, Claudia (Joe) Wallace of Davenport, IA, Nine grandchildren: Tyler, Grayson, and Cory Flint; Kate Maeger, Brittny Flint Loveless, Carissa Flint Terry, Laura Wallace, Sam Wallace, Maggie Wallace, and 10 great grandchildren, Amanda Flint, Riley and Maguire Flint, Alix and Carsyn Flint, Emily, Sean and Caden Mager, Layla and Gemma Grace Terry.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband David, and sisters Margaret Mitchell Downy and Dorothy Mitchell Clark.
