CAL third grader Tayleigh Whitney saw a different side of agriculture at the Franklin County Farm Bureau’s annual Third Grade Ag Fair.
“It’s exciting,” she said. “I like learning how to train the animals and what to do.”
Farm Bureau has sponsored the ag fair for more than 15 years. Area FFA chapters come together to educate their younger peers. Third graders from Hampton-Dumont, CAL and West Fork schools get to experience farm animals up close, study Iowa’s top crop exports and learn the importance of farm and electrical safety from their high school FFA counterparts.
The third graders had the opportunity to interact with horses, cows, pigs, sheep, chicks and llamas, and learn more about what those animals do and how they affect the students’ lives—such as sheep giving wool that is turned into clothing.
Sarah DeBour, Tall Corn FFA Advisor and CAL and H-D Agricultural Education Instructor, said that the ag fair gives FFA students the chance to “show off” their agricultural knowledge that they’ve learned through classes and service. At the same time, it educates a younger generation of future farmers or those that just want to learn a little bit more about Iowa’s major industries.
