Active shooter exercise helps prepare H-D teachers for real-life situation

The sound of gunfire rattled the hallways at South Side Elementary last week as bullet casings from a rifle and handgun fell to the floor. Faculty members remained inside their rooms and offices, eagerly waiting for the shots to stop.

     Thankfully, it was all just a drill.

     The exercise was part of a joint preparation plan meant to train Hampton-Dumont staff members on crisis management. Local law enforcement officers walked through three district buildings after students were dismissed Sept. 17 and fired off rounds while teachers sat in their rooms. The drill was intended to familiarize faculty members with gunfire so they could recognize the sound in the event that a shooter enters a school building.

     For some teachers, the exercise hit home.
