Margaret Hearn’s title at South Side Elementary School is technically “classroom volunteer,” but to the students, she has a much bigger role.
“They call me grandma,” said the 97-year-old Hearn.
For the last 34 years, Hearn has served as a volunteer in the Hampton-Dumont district, cutting out materials, correcting papers, binding books and making copies for the teachers. In that time, Hearn has become a familiar and friendly face at South Side to both students and teachers.
“The kids just love seeing her,” said third grade teacher Wendy Buseman.
Hearn came to the district first as a volunteer at the Dumont school in 1984 following her retirement as a cashier from what is now MidAmerican Energy. Not wanting to spend her days at home, Hearn contacted the district to see if they could use an extra set of hands around the school.
